360iDev – iPhone Dev Conferences Compared

With a few alternatives to 360|iDev coming up, we thought it might make sense to talk about the options available to the community. This way those, who haven’t decided, can make the most informed decision.

So what makes sense for you?  Well, let’s go through some of the driving reasons for attending a show and find the one that best fits you.

Travel: If travel is not an option, then go to the one that’s close enough to walk or drive to.  If travel is an option, then flying to iPhoneDevCamp or 360|iDev are the best options since you get more bang for you buck.

Attitude: By this we mean, the attitude of your fellow attendees towards the iPhone platform.  If you’re a hobbyist that just wants to see what the hype is about, then go to iPhoneDevCamp.  At $50, you’re gonna find yourself surrounded by a bunch of hobbyists.  If you serious about making a living on the iPhone Platform, then 360|iDev is the best as we talk about the business side as well as the development stuff, have hands-on sessions (for free) and almost twice as many dev sessions as VTM.

<armsInAir>Supah-Stars!</armsInAir>: If seeing some big names from the Mac and iPhone world is your goal (and really, for some it is), any of the 3 will give your opportunities to “see” some superstars.  We’ve never been to the other two, so we can’t speak for them.  However, at 360|iDev, the superstars also party with you on 3 nights so you can meet them, chat with them and (if you really want to) get their autograph!  If you do get autographs, give a token bone to the organizers and ask for theirs.  We want to feel special too.  LOL

Timeliness: If you can’t wait, get your butt over to Yahoo HQ (or one of the satellite locations) for iPhoneDevCamp since it starts tonight (well a party does, the real meat is Saturday).  Next up would be 360|iDev at the end of September and then VTM in mid-October.  Ask your boss when would be the best time to go and run with that one.

Community Vibe/Action: Again, we’ve never been to iPhoneDevCamp and the VTM show has yet to go down.  We were told though by those did attend IDC and 360|iDev last time that our show had a stronger community vibe.  People wanted to interact and get to know each other.  The interaction was so good that the idea for App Treasures was born at our conference.  You gotta admit, that’s pretty cool. New ventures formed from the connections made at 360|iDev

History: By this we mean show history.  iPhoneDevCamp is on rev 3 and it shows.  The camp has changed quite a bit from what it was the first time.  360|iDev is on rev 2.  It was built on a tested formula and it showed.  Attendees loved the show as you can read here.  VTM is on rev 1, so will be a new experience for all involved.  If a track record is important, then definitely weigh your options carefully.

The purpose of this post isn’t why you should be at 360|iDev. We do want you there, but having you know your options is more important to us.  We want everyone to attend the event that makes the most sense to them.  Hopefully, the competition feels the same, but again, we can’t speak for them.

That being said, if you read the chart and made us your choice, click here and reg now!  We’ve sold out the first 100 cheaper tickets and sales hasn’t really slowed down since.  Get in before it’s too late!

360iDev – Spend the Sat/Sun Sunday before 360iDev learning iPhone OpenGL programming

We’re happy to have the pleasure to work with Noel and Dan, and the fact that they’ve decided to offer this great training, leading up to 360|iDev is just awesome! Developers can start with their training to ramp up for the full 360|iDev conference, all in the same place even!

Check out the description below!

360iDev speaker Noel Llopis will be teaching his Mobile Orchard iPhone OpenGL Programming Class the Saturday and Sunday before the conference.

Designed for CocoaTouch/UIKit programmers, Noel’s class packs everything you need to get started creating high-performance, 2D and 3D OpenGL applications into an intensive 2-day class. The class emphasizes practical knowledge and working code: you’ll write OpenGL apps showing 2D and 3D object rendering, animation, lighting, multitexturing, and point sprites.

Noel’s a master OpenGL programmer with a demonstrated ability to clearly communicate complex, graphics programming topics. He single-handedly created the critically acclaimed Flower Garden App, and his PC/console titles include The Bourne Conspiracy, Darkwatch, the MechAssault series and and Missile Command. He writes a monthly column for Game Developer Magazine and his blog shows up as the second result (after Wikipedia) for a game programmer search on Google.

Conference attendees save $300 — use “360″ as a coupon code. Only $999 with early bird registration and conference discount. Will be held in the same hotel as 360iDev; the conference’s discounted room rate applies. Details and registration at http://mobileorchard.com/opengl

Register now for 360|iDev to get the Hands-On training discount! Don’t miss out on the best iPhone developer conference this year!

360iDev – iPhoneLife Magazine

il_logo_sm_web

We’re thrilled to have iPhoneLife magazine with us as a sponsor. I mean, we’re iPhone developers, it’s a magazine all about the iPone, I can’t think of a better fit! Like Peanut butter and jelly, Pickles and ice cream, sardines and Fluff… ok well not that last one :)

iPhoneLife is a great magazine! We were able to give every attendee a copy at our InsideMobile conference this past Monday and it was my first exposure to the magazine, it’s great!

Even better, you can check it out for free!

free_issue_2

We’ll have a copy for every attendee as well, but why wait?

Register now! Be with 300+ iPhone Developers, not Hobbyists, developers making a living as iPhone developers, looking to connect and network.

360iDev – Do you want to write?

For those of you that might not know, Tom and I have created a side business of 360|Conferences, called 360|Whisperings.

We’re changing technical publishing for the better (We hope!)

360|Whisperings, is all eContent, there’s no dead trees, none of the trappings (and time wasting) of traditional publishing… you know, write a book and by the time it’s out the programming language, OS, etc is in the next version.

We’re also not (at least at this time) interested in massive tomes, you know those books, the kind you’d use to kill a tarantula. We want articles, short books (or long articles), etc.

There’s no subscription, no monthly fees, it’s pay as you read. There’s a few sites already doing similar things, and you pay monthly, whether you get value from the content or not, whether an entire month is something you couldn’t care less about, etc.

with 360|Whisperings, we’re making technical content as available as itunes makes music. Why pay for a bunch of articles on Drupal? Why not just spend .99 or 2.99 on a technical artcile, from a known name in the field, that’s been reviewed and edited by Us, and that you can return if absolutely hate?

All that said, why don’t you sign on to write for us. We’re not a big publisher, so there’s no sliminess, there’s no contract locking you into our clutches forever.

Drop us an email and let’s talk about it!

360iDev – The Speakers – Collin Donnell

Collin is another 360|iDev alum, returning to hang out with us in Denver. He’s wicked smart, if you don’t believe me, just check out his topic, “Starting Core Animation” You won’t be let down.

Learn about Apple’s powerful layer based animation framework to enhance user experience. Topics will include types of animation and layers.

I’ll admit, the things I know about Core Animation would fill a thimble… actually they’d fill some sort of sub-atomic thimble, but I’m getting off topic, LOL.
but if you’re interested in the awesome visual cues and animations that seem inherent in iPhone apps, this session will be for you. Collin will show you how to tap into the built in, awesomeness that Apple has made available for developers.
Collin’s is only 1 of the 40+ session we’ve got lined up for everyone at 360|iDev! Register now! Don’t miss out the best iPhone developer conference in the world (if we do say so ourselves, but it’s not just us!)

360iDev – The Speakers – Michael Schneider

One of our more popular sessions at 360|iDev San Jose was Michael’s “legal issues in iPhone Development”

And when I say popular I mean, his session was Wednesday, the last slot of the day, and not only was the room full, but people stayed a good 20 minutes or so over. How many conferences does that happen at. Shoot how many let that happen even?!

Michael is back with more awesome advice in a repeat of the session from last time. Repeat’s a strong term, since really it’s just 80 minutes or discussion, going where attendees take it, which is in the end what we love to have happen.

Overview of legal issues facing iPhone developers as they create and bring applications to market. This session tends to be an open Q&A regarding legal and business issues in iPhone development.

If  you’ve got questions about starting your iPhone business, or have already started but have questions, this session is for you. Don’t miss out on all the great content, 40+ sessions! Register now! You’re not going to find this breadth and depth of content at other events, certainly not this affordably! i guarantee! :D

360iDev – The Speakers – Chuck Smith & Judith Meyer

Internationalization is a strange beast to be sure. On the one hand, you want to make the best app with world-wide appeal. On the other, you’ve likely only mastered 1 language. Even if you know 2 or 3 languages, you still fall short from covering the gambit.

Here’s the description from Chuck and Judith‘s session entitled “Internationalizing your apps”,

Want more sales outside of the USA, but don’t know where to start? I will show you the ins and outs of each step that must be taken and give guidelines on what you can do to be sure your apps feel local to everyone around the world, including text, images and the interface itself. You will get step by step instructions on how to internationalize any application. Also learn about the language limitations in App Stores around the world and a nice way to find the right translators for your apps.

The world is your stage and these two speakers will insure you can rock it.  Chuck and Judith both live in Germany, with Chuck originally hailing from the States.  In my book, that offers them a bit more street cred in their talk.  Don’t pretend your native language is the only important one out there, because in a global economy you can bet it isn’t.

Register now to grab 1 of the 12 remaining $360 tickets.  Surely, once you’ve conquered internationalization, the new app sales will reimburse you that $360.  Even if you drag your feet and buy after the price increase, world market sales can surely gross $499.  Like the saying goes, “They may not know me in America, but I’m BIG in Japan!”

360iDev – The Speakers – Joe Pezzillo & Dan Burcaw

We’ve all seen the app updates with “Tested on 3.0″, we’ve got AIM and Foursquare with push notifications, etc

Ever looked into Apple’s Push Notification? If you thought it was as a simple as flicking a swtich, think again!

Joe Pezzillo and Dan Burcaw will be presenting in September on “Push it Up! Implementing Apple’s Push Notifications for Fun & Profit!

Dan & Joe walk you through how and why to add push notifications to your application, what’s required on the server side with plenty of working sample code and specific examples to guide you through every step of the process. After showing you how to implement it yourself, they explain how their new company Push.IO is helping developers make it easy to scale.

Enabling Push in your app is just the start and Dan and Joe will show you how to get your application up and running with Push Notifications in no time.
You’ll get no better source than Dan and Joe, at WWDC they launched a joint venture called Push.io which focuses on providing the needed backend to enable Push on your apps. DON’T WORRY. this session won’t be a “Sign up for Push.IO” schill fest, we wouldn’t allow it :) You can attend other conferences if you just want to be sold to.
Register now, while there’s still a few $360 tickets left. They’re going fast and won’t last much longer, then it’s $500! Still a bargain and cheaper than other “iphone” conferences with a fraction of the speakers. Don’t miss out on the premiere iPhone developers conference! Register Now!

360iDev – The Speakers – Brent Simmons

We all know who Brent Simmons is, we all use (really? you’re not? What’s your deal?) Net News Wire, or some Newsgator product.

This September in Denver, Brent will be talking about “Building Custom Media Apps with NewsGator’s iPhone Framework

Not only has Newsgator created an great iPhone RSS reader, but now there’s a framework for building kick ass iPhone apps, from a company that’s no slouch in the ‘kick ass app’ department.

With NewsGator’s iPhone Media App Framework you can easily build iPhone apps like All Things Digital’s, with news, thumbnails, audio, video, and photo galleries. The framework also supports endless customization, from modifying the built-in views to adding entirely new features and user interface. You can use the framework as a foundation: let it handle the basics, so you can spend time on the cool parts of your app.

Make sure you register before the final ‘cheap’ registrations run out. Only $360 before the price goes up to $500. Still a bargain for sure, but why pay more when you can act now! We’re almost out of those tickets! Register Now!

360iDev – Schedule!

As usual, a lot of tough choices went into the schedule. We had so many incredible submissions, it was hard to pick. I wish we had a whole week, just to have room for all the great topics we got.

Unfortunately we only have 3 days (Plus 1 pre-conference training day). We’re still working on Sunday’s line up, but that’s normal as it’s usually a mix of 101 and sponsored training.

You can download the schedule PDF here. We’ll have an iPhone friendly app shortly we hope to help with this. You can also take a peak at the gDoc we’ve got below.
