360iDev 2011 – Call For papers open!

It’s that time! Got something you want to share with the iOS community? Here’s your chance! Submit a talk or three to 360|iDev 2011!

The submission window will be open until noon on March 4th. Don’t dilly dally. You can submit as many session ideas as you like. We prefer new fresh cutting edge stuff, no sloppy seconds from other events, etc.

Sometimes we select 2 topics from 1 speaker, so don’t worry about submitting just 1 or anything.

LASTLY. If you’re submitting a team presentation (that’d be you and 1 or more other folks) we can only provide 1 room per presentation, so you’ll have to share, or split the cost of the second room.

OK, go submit your topics!

360iDev 2011 – Dates and Location Announcement!

See you in Denver, in September!

We’ve been working on finding the right place to hold 360|iDev here in Denver and think we found it. The Crowne Plaza Downtown. Yeah, DOWNTOWN.

We know the Austin location was not right downtown, so getting around was a cab or shuttle ride, and a kind of pain in the ass. SO we’re right downtown. 2 blocks off the 16th St Mall, tons or bars and restaurants, and lots to do!

We’ll be updating the Hotel page with details and the room booking link today or tomorrow, but the dates (September 11-14) and location (The Crowne Plaza Downtown) are 100% locked in!

What’s next?

  1. Hotel page. As soon as we have the booking information we’ll update the page. We got an awesome room rate for attendees, that INCLUDES in room internet!
  2. Call for papers (I’d suggest you check this site Wednesday morning, just sayin’)
  3. Creative junk! We’ll be coming up with the (actual) logo, sticker, etc so stay tuned, it’s gonna be sweet! Don’t think the shirts won’t rock this time!

What’s this mean to you?

Well mostly it means, if you didn’t buy the faithul ticket already, it’s gone. Sorry we told you, the moment we lock in the details that ticket goes away. Starting now, and for the next 3 weeks, the early bird ticket is on sale. This ticket will be the last chance to save some coin. If you’re not sure it’s gonna be worth it, ask around.

If you’re wondering why September, I’ll tell ya. We’re only doing 1 360|iDev this year. That’s it, just the one. We’ll be packing the awesome of 2 into 1 bad ass event. We’re waiting until after WWDC so that we can all talk about the awesome stuff we’re working on, that’s likely to be NDA until then. Plus early September in Denver is awesome. Great weather, great time of year.

See you in Denver!

360iDev – From Game Jam to Appstore

The Game Jam, is a great time. It’s also an awesome place to create a game that will someday be up on the appstore. Case in point Star Fighter X2 By our pal Dan at Manic Gaming. This game started out life in the Game Jam, as a prototype. Now it’s in the app store!

The Game Jam started in Denver 2009, and we’ve continued it ever since. In San Jose 2010 The Touch Arcade Game Jam saw a ton of awesome games being worked on, developers collaborating, sharing their knowledge and skills, to help each other out.

The Game Jam brings together developers of all skill levels, to collaborate and build games or learn game theory. Many developers with little experience in game development use the Game Jam as a launch pad to quickly ramp up and leave the next morning with a firm understanding of Game Dev. Touch Arcade, our awesome sponsor in San Jose did several posts about the experience.

To take part in the Game Jam you have to be an attendee, register now!

360iDev – So… 360|Mac?

Interesting times, no?

It’s sad to see Wolf close up C4. Sad to see Apple basically snub it’s nose at the mac desktop crowd.

Makes me wonder if (I’ve entertained this thought a few times) there should be a 360|Mac? Aimed specifically at the desktop app builders, bringing the same great content (Maybe more/better parties) the iPhone community has come to expect.

Nothing is firm, this is more just my thinking out loud post. I do love Mac desktop apps, I do think it’s a bummer that Apple is focusing all of WWDC on the iPhone.

What do you think? Point your mac dev friends to this post. if there’s interest, let’s do it.

Remember, this fall. 360|iDev Austin.

360iDev – In Pictures

I posted about what you do and don’t get, and we’ve done more posts than I can count on the overall vibe, and the parties etc. So I wanted to take a minute to just post some pictures of the past 360|iDev events. I grabbed these off of flickr. The technical content you get at 360|iDev is beyond compare, truly, feel free to ask anyone who’s attended, but that’s just part of the story. The rest is the community of  iPhone developers geeking out, sharing stories, code, forming companies, finding work, etc.

360iDev – USB Drive materials

we’ve collected a few more presos, as always, it’s not all of them. :) Some speakers just never give ‘em up. If there’s something you want that’s not in the archive, harass the speaker :) we encourage it.

This archive is the entire thumbdrive, it’s 160mb. From now on what we’ll do is only provide the files that are new or changed since the conference started, but this time we didn’t plan on that, so you have to DL the entire package. Sorry about that.

Hope to see you in San Jose!! The Call for papers is going to open soon, and registration is open for those early birds that want to grab the lowest price possible!

360idev – it’s a wrap

I don’t even know where to begin, trying to wrap up the conference. David does a really great job of capturing why we do what we do, read it. It’s worth the read, but here’s a few of the many gems of why I love doing what I do.

We’ve raved on this blog about the speakers already, so I’ll wrap that up with, EVERY SINGLE ONE WAS AWESOME! That’s really all there is to say. Special thanks to David Whatley, not only did he agree to speak at the last minute, but also stepped up to moderate a frakkin’ awesome lunch time panel on “The App Store” that inspired us to make sure panels are a bigger priority in future schedules.

We had a really great time, Tom and I both agree, the 4 days of actual conference make up for the 5 months of looking for sponsors, selling tickets, dealing with hotels, etc. It’s so amazing to be with such an incredible brain trust, exchanging ideas, talking opening about troubles and successes in iPhone development.

So much cool stuff happened too, that the mind wobbles, whether it’s every attendee getting a Mobile Sketchbook, courtesy of Apress and Dean Kaplan, or Aurora Feint Releasing Open Feint 2.1.

Our official sponsor, Apress provided 30 some odd books for our raffle, and Ebags (Local Denver Company!) provided 5 backpacks as well. The raffle is our way of encouraging attendees to participate in session surveys, and it works. We had a ton of submissions and since each submission is an entry in the raffle, those who submitted for each session they attended had awesome odds, and it showed.

We also got to experience what will now be a full fledged feature of the conference. The Game Jam. Mad props to Noel for throwing it together. I admit I was little unsure whether 1 night was enough to roll out a game, even a rough one. Turns out it’s enough time to turn out several.

360iDev – There’s a calendar for that

We’re hoping the App ChaiOne wrote will get approved, Speaker Howard Fore is also working on a kick ass webapp, BUT baring both of those…

Subscribe to this gCal, to have the latest info on speaker/session time slots, etc.

It’s not too late to register, but it’s almost too late to not hate yourself for missing out on the best iPhone developer conference of the year :) Just sayin’

360iDev – DUB group for connecting onsite

dub_tagline_smWe had a great conversation with Chris from DUB the other day (I’ve been on the iPhone beta for a few days, and using the app for a couple of weeks)

The idea isn’t super new, it’s a business card, sans business card. What’s novel (at least to me) is that you can create groups (perfect for events) and everyone who registers for that event could (in the future) automatically get a DUB ID. Then at the event you just look at the group and see who’s there and if you want, you add them and send them your contact info. There’s

iPhone 2.5

no spamminess to it, you have to approve all inbound requests, and such, but it’s a cool way to connect with people at an event and share contact info with.

What I like is that it’s not a new contact app. It pipes all contacts (and updates) to your contacts app. Which is nice cuz I keep my contacts app and Google in sync, so a new app, would be the suck. Anytime someone I know updates their info, my address is book is up to date. Think of it as Plaxo, +mobile -what we don’t like about Plaxo.

So take a look, get the iPhone app (iTunes link) it’s free. Join the ’360idevdenver’ group, and share your contact info, leave your business cards at home!

Join the group, register for 360|iDev, before it’s too late, which it almost is! It’s gonna be a great time! Don’t miss out! Register Now!

360|iDev to have 2 (yup, 2!) “Top 3 Paid App” developers at the show

Let’s be honest, you’re into iPhone development for one reason and one reason alone: to break into the Top 3 Paid Apps list. Sure, to follow your heart and make the world a better place is up there too, but you want to make money while doing all that.

That’s why we’re proud to announce that we have, not 1, but 2 indies that have cracked the highly coveted “Top 3″ chart.

First off, as we’ve announced already, Keith and Natalia from Imangi Studios. Imangi is a member of the App Treasures group. Their game, Harbor Master, broke into the Top 3 spot on Friday, July 17th. John and I are very addicted to the game. If you haven’t played it, go get it now (iTunes Link).

The creators of this (and many other great games and one non-game app) will share all their knowledge during the Wednesday Keynote. John and I officially sought Imangi out and forced them to come share their great knowledge with everyone.

We thought they were the only Top 3 speakers we’d be getting. However, on September 9th, Noel Llopis of Snappy Touch, send us an email introduction: “David Whatley, creator of geoDefense, wants to talk. Can you squeeze him in?” We have a fourth room for late coming stuff like this, so we said sure. I mean, who doesn’t love TD games, much less one of the best on the platform?” We work out the details, but all the while, David holds back a little secret from us. His new game, geoDefense Swarm was in review.

September 14: geoDefense Swarm gets approved
September 19: It hits #2 in Top Paid Apps

Lucky for you, David is still going to come talk. Only now, he has mad street cred to back up his talk, entitled “How to make Mad Money with an iPhone Game”. It’ll be going down Monday right after Matt Drance’s keynote.

Again, if you’re serious about learning how to be successful on the App Store, you have 2 chances to hear from 2 different parties that cracked the Top 3 charts. Registration price is just $699, which is a small price to pay for the millions you’ll make with their knowledge. Register now or forever lose out on this knowledge.
