360iDev 2013 – WWDC Scavenger hunt, it’s on!

Screen Shot 2013-05-17 at 9.55.30 AM

WWDC is almost here! We hope you’re as excited as we are! If you’re going to be in San Francisco, we’ll be hanging out all week at Alt WWDC, drop in and say hi, check out some of the sessions they’ve got lined up!

As we’ve done the last few years (except last year!) we’re announcing the 360|iDev WWDC USB drive Scavenger hunt (#usbhuntWWDC)

If you’re not familiar with the USB Hunt, it’s a fun little scavenger hunt we organize in and around Moscone Center the week of WWDC. We load up 6 USB Drives (One is pictured right there to the right) with promo codes, fliers, helpful tools, and much more. Oh yeah also each drive has a free pass to 360|iDev 2013 and a free ticket to the 360|iDev Night Of Meat on it.

We stash the drives during the week and tweet clues about where we’ve hidden them. It’s always lots of fun to see the tweet from the person who found the drive.

Not only is this the announcement of the game, but also the invitation to participate. if you’ve got a game or app you want on the drive, or a tool or service, etc just let us know (you can use the contact us page) Each drive is 8gb so there’s lots of room for goodies. All are welcome as long as it’s something fun, cool or useful to the iOS community.

360iDev 2013 – Call For Papers Closes 4-15

The title says it all. This is your fair warning, the Call For Papers, will be closing at noon on April 15th.

Not 1pm. Not End of Day. Not midnight or 11:59. 12 noon, Mountain time.

We’ve already got almost 100 submissions! We’re super stoked so many folks want to present at 360|iDev 2013!

If you haven’t submitted, don’t delay, 360|iDev is all about the community sharing what they know! It’s your turn!

See you in September

post

360iDev 2013. Call For Papers…. OPEN

That’s right boys and girls! It’s that time! Got something to share? Something awesome, something that will blow everyone’s minds? Then that’s what you should submit for 360|iDev 2013.

360|iDev 2013 is gonna be great! Not only are we expecting to sell out again (and are already on our way to that goal) but we’re really going to try to raise the bar higher than ever. We want really technical talks, really experimental ideas, things no one else is doing or talking about.

360|iDev always has the best content from the best folks, let’s keep that trend going. Whether you want to present on business, development or design, go submit your topic RIGHT NOW. Don’t wait. Don’t send us an email after the CFP closes, don’t tweet about how sad you are you didn’t get to submit. Go submit something awesome, right now.

The Opening of the Call For Papers is always part of the worst part of the conference. Having to choose form hundreds of awesome submissions. If you’ve ever submitted to an event and not heard back, or gotten a form letter email, that’s not what we do. It’s time consuming and makes me really sad, but we email every submitter a person email telling them we couldn’t accept their submission. With as much heart and soul as people put into submissions, it’s the right thing to do, letting them know in a timely manner. So yeah the process begins today! Go submit something! Be Brave!

Oh and if you’re curious how the process works, in the interest of transparency and encouraging as much diversity as possible, we detailed the process here.

360iDev 2013 – Save the Date

When we talked last at 360|iDev 2012 I talked about moving the conference to spring time. There were a number if reasons I was thinking of that move.

But as we do, we asked those who cared the most what they thought. After all none of the reasons to move were life and death. Heck one was weather :) SO we asked. And the answer kinda surprised us.

So guess what? 360|iDev 2013 will be in the fall. September 8-11 to be exact. So mark your calendars, save the date, all that good stuff. Early tickets will go on sale in a bit, and the call for papers will open in a few more months as well. For now, just keep the date clear.

Oh and we suggest keeping February 4-5 clear too :) more on that in a few days.

360iDev 2012 – Collected materials

By no means a complete collection, but when asked these are the links we got back.  If you’re looking for other session materials, definitely ping the speaker, they’ll gladly share.

Also if watching the session videos, many speakers put where the materials would be at the end of the presentation.
See you next year.

360iDev 2012 – That’s a Wrap

I’m sitting here on Thursday after 360|iDev 2012, the car is unloaded, and I’m catching up on emails, and wishing the conference was next week.

Every year it’s a humbling experience to be in the presence of so many super awesome people, who are all doing super awesome things!

This year’s 360|iDev sold out and as is always the case oversold. Folks who thought they had a ticket, but didn’t, etc. All in we came in at around 362 or so. Not bad, and slightly more than last year!

360|iDev wouldn’t happen without awesome sponsors, speakers, attendees and volunteers. I can’t express my thanks to all of you enough. The 4 days of the conference are the highlight of all the work that goes into the event, and each one reminds me why I started doing this event in the first place.

A few personal highlights.

  • Opening the show for the first time ever. In the past I’ve welcomed everyone and handed the mic to someone else. While incredibly nerve wracking, and fraught with those damn stomach butterflies, it was great to share (I Hope) some of my excitement about the conference and the iOS community with everyone to start the week off.
  • Being able to share a beer at the parties with folks I’d never met before. I know I’ll never be able to meet each attendee, but I try to meet as many folks as I can and say hi and toast to iOS with ‘em :)
  • Sitting at the reg table each morning to say good morning as everyone shows up.
  • The Game Jam. These folks are incredible. Watching what they created in must 12 hours is crazy inspiring.
  • The (new tradition) Board Game Jam. I wasn’t expecting to participate in this, but when I walked in on a game of Cards Against Humanity I was stuck. An hour and a half later, I was still laughing so hard my sides hurt. What a fun game! Thanks Brandon Alexander for setting that up.
  • The Apple Event live blog watching party. We didn’t get to actually order (though that’s solved today!) but it was fun watching the live blog update, and listening to the TWiT crew provide commentary. Thanks to Charles Perry for the awesome Buzzword bingo game, and cool prizes! In all the years of 360|iDev this is the first time an Apple Event has lined up with one. That was a ton of fun.
  • While bittersweet, it’s great to watch people sign the welcome banner. I wish I had the wall space in the house to hang them all year. It’s awesome to read the messages and see the names!
  • Chatting with sponsors and making sure they’re doing ok. Too many events forget sponsors once they’re set up. I know I’d hate being treated like that.
All in all, a great time, with great people, I couldn’t ask for more!

I can’t wait to get to work on 360|iDev 2013. It’s gonna be better and packed with more awesome than this year!

See you guys soon enough :)

Now it’s time to start working on the session videos.

360iDev 2012 – Ask Me Anything

We finally decided what to do with that last time slot of the day…

A speaker panel of Ask Me Anything.

We’ve asked

Kyle Richter

Marcus Zarra

Jaimee Newberry and

Andria Jensen

to spend that last session of the day on Wednesday before we all go home, answering questions from the audience on anything. Presumably things they can answer :)

It should be a fun way to wrap up the conference.

See you next week! Only 5 tickets left.

360iDev 2012 Night of Meat on Mapquest

Our friends at Mapquest have 12 seats at the 360|iDev Night Of Meat, taking place Sunday (the 9th) night at 6:00.

We’re helping them find good homes for those Night of Meat seats. To win one just leave a comment here. First 12 comments are the winners.

Please make sure you can actually attend the Night Of Meat. It’s Sunday night in Downtown Denver. The organizers are working out ride sharing but you could also light rail up for about $4. While you don’t have to be an attendee to get in on Night Of Meat, why wouldn’t you be attending?

Just answer this question the comments.

Where and what year was the first 360|iDev?

That’s it. easy right? :)

360iDev 2012 – Apple event on Wednesday?

So yeah rumors are flying like crazy that there’s gonna be an Apple event on the 12th, which of course is the last day of 360|iDev 2012… Coincidence? Actually yeah I wish we had that kind of juice, but it’s a total coincidence :)

We’re working on an alternate schedule for Wednesday that would allow us to do a general session at 11am (typically when Apple events are held Mountain time) so we can watch the love blog action. So if for some reason you thought being at 360|iDev would mean you’d miss the announcement, don’t sweat it. We’ll make sure we’re all watching it. And really, watching the live blog with a few hundred other iOS geeks, is way more fun than watching it along :)

Lunch might be early on Wednesday, but otherwise, we’ll make the schedule work around the Apple Event if it takes place on the 12th

See you next month! We’re doing to 50 tickets, have you gotten yours?

360iDev 2012 – App tear down

We saw this at Microconf earlier this year with Websites. It was awesome. People called out their domain name and the speaker(s) on stage gave an honest critique, asking questions about why something was where it was, or the thought behind the layout, etc. it  was great. it’s so easy to get inside your own head or product that you make assumptions on what people do and don’t know. we do it all the time with the conferences, forgetting we get so many new attendees that some don’t know something because they didn’t attend the previous year, etc. This type of tear down from someone who’s (most likely) never used your site/service is a great way to force you back out into the real world.

So we’re taking the idea, and tweaking it a bit. Not websites, but apps. Maybe yours is in the store, or maybe it only runs on your dev device. Doesn’t matter. We’ll have an ELMO set up, you’ll load the app up and let the speaker who’s running that session critique. It’s not a lengthy 30 minute review, it’s 5-10 minutes or so.

What this isn’t is a “Let’s tear down this app in the store because it’s ugly or sucks” it’s not a design or app review session of what to do or not to do. It’s attendees in the room, showing their apps.
