360iDev – So… 360|Mac?

Interesting times, no?

It’s sad to see Wolf close up C4. Sad to see Apple basically snub it’s nose at the mac desktop crowd.

Makes me wonder if (I’ve entertained this thought a few times) there should be a 360|Mac? Aimed specifically at the desktop app builders, bringing the same great content (Maybe more/better parties) the iPhone community has come to expect.

Nothing is firm, this is more just my thinking out loud post. I do love Mac desktop apps, I do think it’s a bummer that Apple is focusing all of WWDC on the iPhone.

What do you think? Point your mac dev friends to this post. if there’s interest, let’s do it.

Remember, this fall. 360|iDev Austin.

360iDev – In Pictures

I posted about what you do and don’t get, and we’ve done more posts than I can count on the overall vibe, and the parties etc. So I wanted to take a minute to just post some pictures of the past 360|iDev events. I grabbed these off of flickr. The technical content you get at 360|iDev is beyond compare, truly, feel free to ask anyone who’s attended, but that’s just part of the story. The rest is the community of  iPhone developers geeking out, sharing stories, code, forming companies, finding work, etc.

360iDev – Volunteer to help out and get in free

We realize that the economy still a little suck-tastic. As you may know we try to keep our events as cost effective as possible, 40 sessions, Sunday hands on. Hotel block pricing to help lower the cost of staying near the event, etc.

Sometimes it’s not enough, we get that. Back in September we experimented with having volunteers. We’ve had temps at past events (360|Flex San Jose ’07 and Seattle) and while that works ok, we tried to reduce the need, because that helped keep our costs low.

BUT

We’ve realized, time and again that we still need manpower at certain points, and in fact we’re planning to increase our need (More on that later).

Registration is a bottleneck, whether it’s just Tom and I, or my wife Nicole, or anyone else who pities us in our time of greatest need.

SO…

We’d like to open the call for volunteers. Obviously locals are preferred but anyone is welcome to apply. It’s simple, we need about 8-10 volunteers. In exchange for a few hours a day of time, you get a free pass to the conference and when we don’t need you, you’re free to attend sessions etc. We can’t cover hotel/airfare etc. Just admission to the event.

If the price to get in the door is outside your budget for whatever reason, this might be the perfect opportunity for you.

Here’s what you need to do.

Email us at info (AT) 360idev (Dot) com

We need:

Your Name

Why you’d like to volunteer

Your background in iPhone development

That’s about it :) You need to be able to commit to Sunday thru Wednesday and be at Ebay by 7:30am each day.

Our needs aren’t over the top or anything. We need help making the badge pickup/registration process faster. We hate having to delay the keynote in order to hand things out, etc.

We’re hoping to get some sort of basic videography set up for each room. As volunteer you’ll be in charge of starting and stopping the recording for that room, and telling the speaker when he/she has 10 and 5 minutes left. That’s it. After each session, you’ll have to bring the camera to us to offload the video, that’s it.

We’ve got a schedule worked out, so no one will be working all day every day.

We’ll be making volunteer selections the week of March 15th. Spread the word, the submission window isn’t open long!

360iDev – USB Drive materials

we’ve collected a few more presos, as always, it’s not all of them. :) Some speakers just never give ‘em up. If there’s something you want that’s not in the archive, harass the speaker :) we encourage it.

This archive is the entire thumbdrive, it’s 160mb. From now on what we’ll do is only provide the files that are new or changed since the conference started, but this time we didn’t plan on that, so you have to DL the entire package. Sorry about that.

Hope to see you in San Jose!! The Call for papers is going to open soon, and registration is open for those early birds that want to grab the lowest price possible!

360idev – it’s a wrap

I don’t even know where to begin, trying to wrap up the conference. David does a really great job of capturing why we do what we do, read it. It’s worth the read, but here’s a few of the many gems of why I love doing what I do.

We’ve raved on this blog about the speakers already, so I’ll wrap that up with, EVERY SINGLE ONE WAS AWESOME! That’s really all there is to say. Special thanks to David Whatley, not only did he agree to speak at the last minute, but also stepped up to moderate a frakkin’ awesome lunch time panel on “The App Store” that inspired us to make sure panels are a bigger priority in future schedules.

We had a really great time, Tom and I both agree, the 4 days of actual conference make up for the 5 months of looking for sponsors, selling tickets, dealing with hotels, etc. It’s so amazing to be with such an incredible brain trust, exchanging ideas, talking opening about troubles and successes in iPhone development.

So much cool stuff happened too, that the mind wobbles, whether it’s every attendee getting a Mobile Sketchbook, courtesy of Apress and Dean Kaplan, or Aurora Feint Releasing Open Feint 2.1.

Our official sponsor, Apress provided 30 some odd books for our raffle, and Ebags (Local Denver Company!) provided 5 backpacks as well. The raffle is our way of encouraging attendees to participate in session surveys, and it works. We had a ton of submissions and since each submission is an entry in the raffle, those who submitted for each session they attended had awesome odds, and it showed.

We also got to experience what will now be a full fledged feature of the conference. The Game Jam. Mad props to Noel for throwing it together. I admit I was little unsure whether 1 night was enough to roll out a game, even a rough one. Turns out it’s enough time to turn out several.

360iDev – There’s a calendar for that

We’re hoping the App ChaiOne wrote will get approved, Speaker Howard Fore is also working on a kick ass webapp, BUT baring both of those…

Subscribe to this gCal, to have the latest info on speaker/session time slots, etc.

It’s not too late to register, but it’s almost too late to not hate yourself for missing out on the best iPhone developer conference of the year :) Just sayin’

360iDev – DUB group for connecting onsite

dub_tagline_smWe had a great conversation with Chris from DUB the other day (I’ve been on the iPhone beta for a few days, and using the app for a couple of weeks)

The idea isn’t super new, it’s a business card, sans business card. What’s novel (at least to me) is that you can create groups (perfect for events) and everyone who registers for that event could (in the future) automatically get a DUB ID. Then at the event you just look at the group and see who’s there and if you want, you add them and send them your contact info. There’s

iPhone 2.5

no spamminess to it, you have to approve all inbound requests, and such, but it’s a cool way to connect with people at an event and share contact info with.

What I like is that it’s not a new contact app. It pipes all contacts (and updates) to your contacts app. Which is nice cuz I keep my contacts app and Google in sync, so a new app, would be the suck. Anytime someone I know updates their info, my address is book is up to date. Think of it as Plaxo, +mobile -what we don’t like about Plaxo.

So take a look, get the iPhone app (iTunes link) it’s free. Join the ’360idevdenver’ group, and share your contact info, leave your business cards at home!

Join the group, register for 360|iDev, before it’s too late, which it almost is! It’s gonna be a great time! Don’t miss out! Register Now!

360|iDev to have 2 (yup, 2!) “Top 3 Paid App” developers at the show

Let’s be honest, you’re into iPhone development for one reason and one reason alone: to break into the Top 3 Paid Apps list. Sure, to follow your heart and make the world a better place is up there too, but you want to make money while doing all that.

That’s why we’re proud to announce that we have, not 1, but 2 indies that have cracked the highly coveted “Top 3″ chart.

First off, as we’ve announced already, Keith and Natalia from Imangi Studios. Imangi is a member of the App Treasures group. Their game, Harbor Master, broke into the Top 3 spot on Friday, July 17th. John and I are very addicted to the game. If you haven’t played it, go get it now (iTunes Link).

The creators of this (and many other great games and one non-game app) will share all their knowledge during the Wednesday Keynote. John and I officially sought Imangi out and forced them to come share their great knowledge with everyone.

We thought they were the only Top 3 speakers we’d be getting. However, on September 9th, Noel Llopis of Snappy Touch, send us an email introduction: “David Whatley, creator of geoDefense, wants to talk. Can you squeeze him in?” We have a fourth room for late coming stuff like this, so we said sure. I mean, who doesn’t love TD games, much less one of the best on the platform?” We work out the details, but all the while, David holds back a little secret from us. His new game, geoDefense Swarm was in review.

September 14: geoDefense Swarm gets approved
September 19: It hits #2 in Top Paid Apps

Lucky for you, David is still going to come talk. Only now, he has mad street cred to back up his talk, entitled “How to make Mad Money with an iPhone Game”. It’ll be going down Monday right after Matt Drance’s keynote.

Again, if you’re serious about learning how to be successful on the App Store, you have 2 chances to hear from 2 different parties that cracked the Top 3 charts. Registration price is just $699, which is a small price to pay for the millions you’ll make with their knowledge. Register now or forever lose out on this knowledge.

360iDev – Sunday Hands-on Training, Your Options

In case you missed it, or we hadn’t added them when you registered, we wanted to make sure you were well aware of your training options for our Pre-Conference training Hands-on.

We’ve got 4 great classes lined up up, they’re all included in the registration price, and they’re all awesome!

Our Hands-on courses range from iPhone development 101, to an all day workshop with Saurik, the man behind the Cydia Store and celebrity in the Jailbreaking world, and everything in between.

Kendall, will be leading a half day session 8:30-12:30 on Debugging your apps, titled “Advanced debugging, peering into the great unknown” If you’re new to debugging or want to see what you don’t know, this session will rock you socks!

In the same room, after lunch we’re going to have a half day hand-on session with Appcelerator’s platform for building mobile applications, there’s options, and Appcelerator is a really cool one! They’ve got some great stuff to share, if you’re interesting in seeing what your iPhone app dev options are, check this session out!

Jay (Saurik) Freeman will be doing an all day workshop titled, “Extending Existing Applications (Techniques in Code Injection)” And don’t worry, this doesn’t require jailbreaking, most of the session is stuff you can do on a jailed device. Saurik is an iPhone mad scientist of the highest order! The Cydia store is to jailbreakers what the app store is the rest of us, it’s a wealth of incredibly cool, vetted, and often signed applications that simply make the iPhone experience that much better.

Jonathan Lehr of About Objects will be in the last Sunday session room doing a full day, iPhone Development 101. Whether you’re completely new to iPhone development or already know a thing or two, this class will fully prepare you for the next three days of 360|iDev. The outline for the class is here, take a look. It’s going to be an intense day, but a must for anyone that wants to ensure they’re ready for Monday thru Wednesday.

If when you registered the last four questions on the registration form, weren’t about training, just email us and we can update the record. You’re not locked into the class you express interest in, we just like to know how many people to plan for. So if you didn’t express an interest, but do want to join us on Sunday, let us know.

Time’s running out, missing 360|iDev could be the thing you regret most about 2009 :) hundred of iPhone developers, 40+ speakers/sessions, free hands-on training. iphone development celebrities, the works, we’ve got it, don’t miss it! Register now!
