360iDev 2013 – Save the Date

When we talked last at 360|iDev 2012 I talked about moving the conference to spring time. There were a number if reasons I was thinking of that move.

But as we do, we asked those who cared the most what they thought. After all none of the reasons to move were life and death. Heck one was weather :) SO we asked. And the answer kinda surprised us.

So guess what? 360|iDev 2013 will be in the fall. September 8-11 to be exact. So mark your calendars, save the date, all that good stuff. Early tickets will go on sale in a bit, and the call for papers will open in a few more months as well. For now, just keep the date clear.

Oh and we suggest keeping February 4-5 clear too :) more on that in a few days.

360iDev 2012 – That’s a Wrap

I’m sitting here on Thursday after 360|iDev 2012, the car is unloaded, and I’m catching up on emails, and wishing the conference was next week.

Every year it’s a humbling experience to be in the presence of so many super awesome people, who are all doing super awesome things!

This year’s 360|iDev sold out and as is always the case oversold. Folks who thought they had a ticket, but didn’t, etc. All in we came in at around 362 or so. Not bad, and slightly more than last year!

360|iDev wouldn’t happen without awesome sponsors, speakers, attendees and volunteers. I can’t express my thanks to all of you enough. The 4 days of the conference are the highlight of all the work that goes into the event, and each one reminds me why I started doing this event in the first place.

A few personal highlights.

  • Opening the show for the first time ever. In the past I’ve welcomed everyone and handed the mic to someone else. While incredibly nerve wracking, and fraught with those damn stomach butterflies, it was great to share (I Hope) some of my excitement about the conference and the iOS community with everyone to start the week off.
  • Being able to share a beer at the parties with folks I’d never met before. I know I’ll never be able to meet each attendee, but I try to meet as many folks as I can and say hi and toast to iOS with ‘em :)
  • Sitting at the reg table each morning to say good morning as everyone shows up.
  • The Game Jam. These folks are incredible. Watching what they created in must 12 hours is crazy inspiring.
  • The (new tradition) Board Game Jam. I wasn’t expecting to participate in this, but when I walked in on a game of Cards Against Humanity I was stuck. An hour and a half later, I was still laughing so hard my sides hurt. What a fun game! Thanks Brandon Alexander for setting that up.
  • The Apple Event live blog watching party. We didn’t get to actually order (though that’s solved today!) but it was fun watching the live blog update, and listening to the TWiT crew provide commentary. Thanks to Charles Perry for the awesome Buzzword bingo game, and cool prizes! In all the years of 360|iDev this is the first time an Apple Event has lined up with one. That was a ton of fun.
  • While bittersweet, it’s great to watch people sign the welcome banner. I wish I had the wall space in the house to hang them all year. It’s awesome to read the messages and see the names!
  • Chatting with sponsors and making sure they’re doing ok. Too many events forget sponsors once they’re set up. I know I’d hate being treated like that.
All in all, a great time, with great people, I couldn’t ask for more!

I can’t wait to get to work on 360|iDev 2013. It’s gonna be better and packed with more awesome than this year!

See you guys soon enough :)

Now it’s time to start working on the session videos.

360iDev 2012 – 60 tickets left!

You read that right, we’re just under a month from 360|iDev 2012 and there’s 60 tickets left. Not 60 for an event with 150 people or 200 people. 360|iDev is gonna be (we’re gonna sell out! I know it!) 350 of the best developers, designers and indie iOS folks around.

If you’re waiting to get your ticket, you’ll be sorry. Last year we sold out the week before the conference. Our goal this year is to do it sooner! We’ve got two weeks! Take a look at the chart here on the left. Denver is the third cheapest place to get to. Airfare has always been cheap to Denver which was one reason we like hosting the conference here. It’s also a beautiful place :)

Remember if you’re flying in and want to carpool/ride share you can leave a comment with your email, etc on this post. This year’s conference is south of Downtown, and sadly not the easiest route from the hotel but there are great Super Shuttle options, especially if you have a group all going the same place.

360|iDev happens once a year, missing it would suck for you! :) Don’t do that to yourself, you owe it your career and professional network, both of which are proven to benefit in huge ways from being at 360|iDev.

See you in September!

360iDev 2012 – Great things come of the Game Jam

For amy this won’t be news at all.

Unicorn Rush was born in 2010 in San Jose, at 360|iDev. It was a Game Jam game, prototyped and built (mostly) in the course of one caffeine and sugar fueled night.

Stuff like this is why we support and love having the game jam at 360|iDev. Seeing folks build something new, completely from scratch in just a few hours, and then actually taking it live to the App store later, is so much win.

Keith and Natalia did it during the Denver 2009 360|iDev (IIRC) with Hippo High Dive as well. There’s more, many more, but you get the point. Whether you’ve got 10 or 0 apps in the App Store when you arrive at 360|iDev on Sunday, there’s a very good chance you can leave with one nearly ready to submit if you want.

so if the Game Jam wasn’t something you were thinking about doing, maybe you should re-think that :)

The Game Jam is also independently run from the conference, we believe it’s better to let the community run the Jam. So check out their page, and by the way they still need some sponsors to cover food, snacks, etc. It’s a great and inexpensive way to support the community.

See you in September! Register now before it’s too late!

So you finished your app. Now what?

Here are three things you should do before you go live to get the ball rolling and set you up for a successful launch.

1. Who wants what you have? If you haven’t already imagined your ideal user, do so immediately. Give yourself a target demographic to approach, you can NOT win trying to be the app everyone wants. If you are still answering the questions, “Who would most benefit from downloading this app?” with “Everyone!” you haven’t answered the question. Keep at it until you have a solid niche to approach. We’ve all heard the cliché, it’s hard to read the label when you are in the bottle, and that’s an especially important thing to keep in mind if you are stumped by this question. If you haven’t attended a conference for iPhone developers, this is the stage where you will make progress at a meeting of like-minds.

2: Meet The Press; If your app is relevant, well designed, and has done well in the first round of testing, it’s time to introduce it to the media (please like WWDC and 360|iDev and other conferences are great for this, if the timing works). This includes bloggers, small niche publications. Even the national media likes to highlight an app that is related to a trending subject they are reporting on. It’s time to write (or hire someone to write) a traditional press release. Contact a local reporter that writes about your niche market and let them know what your app has to offer their audience.

3. Talk to the world through your website and blog. It’s very important that you exercise a bit of your inner extrovert in the marketing phase of your app development. You are an expert when it comes to your niche market, and you should position yourself as such by blogging regularly and/or tweeting. It really does make a difference. This move will help you gain credibility too. Include social media in your plan, and keep your branding strategy stable by using the same carefully chosen name and logo for your app throughout all of your platforms.

These three things are a good start. The most important thing to keep in mind. HUSTLE.

See you in September!

360iDev 2012 – Game Jam needs a leader

If you’ve attended 360|iDev in the past you know about the Game Jam. It’s a ton of fun, and a great way to jump into game development, or help others doing just that. It’s also awesome fun to see what everyone created in just over 12 hours of sugar and caffeine fueled creation.

The Game Jam runs Tuesday night, around 7 or 8 until Wednesday morning around 8 or so.

Here’s the catch this year, we don’t have someone to run it. Traditionally Noel Llopis and Mike Berg have taken the reins to organize the jam and create the topic of the evening. They can’t make it this year though.

So, anyone out there want to take the lead, and ride herd on the funnest 12-13 hours of the conference :) You’d need to decide on the topic of the jam (Previously it’s been “tiny” and “saving the earth” to name two topics), and do the overall coordination. We’ve got the site, and we of course help as much as we can :) but we can’t be the leader of it.

Drop a comment or an email and we’ll chat about it.

360iDev 2011 – Just 39 Days to go!

Are you a game developer? Want to be? Maybe just want to brush up on your dev skills with a little out of the box development.

The Game Jam is for you. And as it turns out, by you. The 360|iDev 2011 Game Jam will take place Tuesday night, sponsored by the iOS community!

The Game Jam is a great place to build your first game, or your tenth. To share what you know and learn new things.

Check out the official page, managed by our pal (and speaker) Mike Berg.

The first time Noel Llopis suggested the Game Jam to us, we loved it. Ever since then we’ve been more than happy to have one take place.

The Game Jam starts around 7pm, and goes until around 8. It’s fully hands on, bring your laptop, we’ll supply the red bull, coffee and snacks.

Then if you like, you can show off your hard work during lunch on Wednesday at the Game Jam Review.

See you there! Make sure you register before we sell out!

360iDev 2011 – Dates and Location Announcement!

See you in Denver, in September!

We’ve been working on finding the right place to hold 360|iDev here in Denver and think we found it. The Crowne Plaza Downtown. Yeah, DOWNTOWN.

We know the Austin location was not right downtown, so getting around was a cab or shuttle ride, and a kind of pain in the ass. SO we’re right downtown. 2 blocks off the 16th St Mall, tons or bars and restaurants, and lots to do!

We’ll be updating the Hotel page with details and the room booking link today or tomorrow, but the dates (September 11-14) and location (The Crowne Plaza Downtown) are 100% locked in!

What’s next?

  1. Hotel page. As soon as we have the booking information we’ll update the page. We got an awesome room rate for attendees, that INCLUDES in room internet!
  2. Call for papers (I’d suggest you check this site Wednesday morning, just sayin’)
  3. Creative junk! We’ll be coming up with the (actual) logo, sticker, etc so stay tuned, it’s gonna be sweet! Don’t think the shirts won’t rock this time!

What’s this mean to you?

Well mostly it means, if you didn’t buy the faithul ticket already, it’s gone. Sorry we told you, the moment we lock in the details that ticket goes away. Starting now, and for the next 3 weeks, the early bird ticket is on sale. This ticket will be the last chance to save some coin. If you’re not sure it’s gonna be worth it, ask around.

If you’re wondering why September, I’ll tell ya. We’re only doing 1 360|iDev this year. That’s it, just the one. We’ll be packing the awesome of 2 into 1 bad ass event. We’re waiting until after WWDC so that we can all talk about the awesome stuff we’re working on, that’s likely to be NDA until then. Plus early September in Denver is awesome. Great weather, great time of year.

See you in Denver!

360iDev – Game Jam sponsored by you, the iOS Community!

I can’t say how awesome the community is! Apple is freaking lucky to have such cool folks, who can go above and beyond for each other, building apps for the iPhone. Not to diminish the iPhone but truly, any platform would rock with folks like you behind it!

The 360|iDev Game Jam, sponsored this time around by non other than our awesome community members is ON! Whether you’re a veteran game maker, or newb looking to get a start at games, the Game Jam is for you! It’s a great time!

It’s simple, the game jam starts around Tuesday night 8ish. It ends, Wednesday morning, around 9ish. Anyone who’d like to present their game is welcome to join me during the Wednesday keynote to show off their game. Past Game Jam efforts have landed in the app store!

We’ll have plenty of Red Bull, and soda, and red vines and what not to keep everyone going.

Whether you’re gonna get yur game jam on our not, thank all these folks for making the Game Jam possible!

See you in Austin!!

360iDev – Speaker Mat Martel

Matt Martel is a great guy, and long time supporter of 360|iDev. It’s always great to have him with us, especially as a speaker! Make sure you check out his session ‘Using an Ad Mediation Layer (AdWhirl, or Mobclix)’ it’s sure to be a good one!

Q: How long have you been doing iOS development?

A: Since April 2008, right after the first SDK was released. I started working on a companion iPhone app to a social networking site (Plum) that has since been acquired by Nokia.

where it died as all things nokia do?

Q: What do you like most about being an iOS Developer?

A: I like community of iPhone developers most. The tools are great, and the individuals at Apple are doing a super job, but the indie developers across the globe are so supportive and helpful.

agreed! The community around iOS is second to none!

Q: What’s your favorite Game?

A: That has to be Compression or Compression HD.

Q: What’s your favorite App?

A: It’s Twitter or NetNewsWire, though NNW needs some serious updating.

lol well you can tell brent simmons, over beers!

Q: Robots or Ninjas?

A: Yeah, robots for me. Have you seen Elf Command?

robot elves!?!?

Q: What would change about the iOS platform if you could change just one thing?

A: Right now I’m working on Game Center. It should run on all devices, and needs offline support.

that makes a lot of sense. I’d love to see game center extend to mac desktop games, how awesome would that be! Maybe by 360|MacDev we’ll have something like that to talk about, lol

Q: What are you most excited about 360|iDev Austin?

A: Never been to Austin, heard great things about it. Also excited to meet new devs and say hi to old friends. Then there’s this iOS 4.2 thing…

really hoping 4.2 comes the week before 360|iDev, how cool would that be! Of course it might put a few presentations in to quick update/rewrite mode, lol.

Q: What would you tell someone on the fence about attending 360|iDev Austin?

A: This is the one conference that can’t be beat. Unlike WWDC or GDC you will not be totally overwhelmed by crowds. This is highly interactive in a way that only a small show can be. Your best bet if you are on a budget or have a schedule conflict. The sessions are super, but the networking is priceless.

Well said! We often tell people, if you can hit both do, but if you have to choose, choose 360|iDev, you’ll get more, for less and there’s lots of beer!
