360idev – Time for a Road Trip!

Who’s up for a road trip? At about this time, two weeks out, we like to pull up the ole google maps, type in the show city (Denver, in this case) then zoom out. We take a look at the surrounding areas and invite the developers in the town to come join us via a road trip.

Road trips have found memories for me. One of the best happened to be with John, my 360|iDev co-planner. We moved him out from Cali to Denver. We went the scenic route, stopping for TacoTime in Utah for him. It was a wonderful drive and good times all around. (The movers in the moving truck broke down, but that’s another story).

Therefore, we’d like to give a shout out to iPhone developers living out in Salt Lake City (UT), Casper (WY), Alburquerque (NM) and Wichita (KS) and Kansas City (MO). Of course, the Boulderites, Springers and Junctioners from CO are also welcomed. (Not to mention people who want to fly from further).

However, for those of you that do take up the challenge of a Road Trip, we promise you a great time after you arrive. There will be enough content to fry your brain and help you forget about being cooped up with x number developers in a car. We’ll also have food and beverage to warm the heart and the spirit. (You know you love that description from my creative writing side!)

Register now then rent or borrow some reliable wheels. Stock up on snacks, sodas and load up your iPods/iPhones with some road music. Definitely let us know if you’re Road Tripping it, we like to track that sorta stuff. :) Heck you can blog your progress on this blog :)

We’re happy to announce that we’ve finally locked down the details for the iPhone 101 hands on Training. Jonathan Lehr, from About Objects, will be with us Sunday for a full day of hands on goodness!

Today we’re very proud to announce a new partnership with Apress as the Official Sponsor of 360|iDev.

This is a very important announcement for a few reasons:

It’s a great fit: Speakers will pretend like they can’t possibly fill up one of our 80 minute slots, but they do. Afterwards, they find out that they have a whole heck of a lot more to say. What better place than a book to say that.
Free books: What developer in their right mind doesn’t like free books? Not to mention that, but we’re talking quality stuff. (Note: Tom’s read 2 of Apress dev books and loves ‘em) When you’re the official sponsor that means you bring a whole lotta books. :)
Bigger Reach: 360|iDev is slowly making inroads as far as reach goes. Granted, we don’t have name recognition like WWDC does, but we’re slowly getting there. With Apress, we can hopefully reach a lot more developers out there that can benefit from the conference.

Having an official show sponsor is a new thing for us. It’s something that we’ll have to investigate and grow, much like everything we do in relation to the shows. The most important thing for us though is making sure that the official sponsor is a great fit for our attendees.

If you’re looking for some hands on Core Animation juju, look no farther than Nathan Eror’s ”Using Core Animation to Build Complex and Attractive Interfaces” session. Nathan will be going deep on Core Animation, and building great User Interfaces and User Experiences on the iPhone.

Core Animation plays an integral role in the iPhone user interface and is responsible for much of its intuitiveness. Careful use of animation can make even an average app a joy to use. In this session you will learn how to effectively apply the features of Core Animation in your own apps. After a brief introduction to the principles behind Core Animation, you will learn how it is used in UIKit. Then, we will dig into the meat of Core Animation and how to use it effectively. Through numerous code examples, you will learn how to tame some of the complexities of the Core Animation API. By the end of this session, you will be comfortable with Core Animation, and your apps will run more smoothly and be more visually appealing.

It’s always a pleasure when women want to present at our conferences, it’s especially when they’re awesome! Jessica Kahn from Tapulous will be with us presenting, ”Building & Maintaining a Family of Applications: Code Reuse on a Platform that Supports One Binary per Application”

Code re-use is huge, not just in iPhone circles, but in general. Every programmer should strive to get some level of code re-use going on, it just makes sense.

The iPhone platform currently prohibits typical means for creating shared code modules: frameworks, dylibs, and loadable bundles. If you’re creating a suite of applications that have common core functionality, this presents something of a maintenance nightmare. Find out how Tapulous, the makers of Tap Tap Revenge (and several other applications all based upon the same core engine), solved this problem to cut costs, save time, and increase quality across the product line. Learn from our experience (including our initial missteps), and jumping through the right Xcode, Subversion, and code-signing hoops will be a breeze for you!

Anytime we can get more women presenters we’re eager to help bring a little balance to the event, so it’s great have so many female presenters at this 360|iDev! We have more women presenting this time than we did in San Jose!

As a programmer, code re-use is one of those tenets that can’t be ignored, so this session will be a big boon for developers just getting into the concept and even those familiar with it.

We just wanted to make that clear. We had heard that the question had come up a few times in the community, and we just want to make sure everyone knows, 360|iDev Denver, will take place, there’s no doubt or question there.

if there’s any lingering concern, drop us an email or a comment, but I promise on my iPhone, which I hold most dear, we will be at the Curtis hotel Sept 27-30th, with as many people as we can get to join us.

We’re actually on the verge of passing our last attendance numbers, which is huge and a major milestone for us!
